"I've done so much, with so little, for so long, that , now, I'm pretty much qualified to do anything with nothing."
Why does this site exist? That's a very good question, and the answer is long and complicated, involving metaphysics and search engines.
Back in the day, before job sites or LinkedIn existed, you had to attract attention to your professional self somehow. My answer to that was to start blogging. In 2000, I wrote all the HTML in a text editor and uploaded it. Then, sometime in late 2001, Movable Type was released, and I moved all my blogging to that platform. That was all great until early 2003 when Movable Type changed their license and made it technically against the license for small projects like my cluster of sites to run without buying a very expensive license. So, I moved again, this time to WordPress. I ran WordPress first as strictly blogging software, then, as it matured, as a full-site content management system. In late 2024, things got uncomfortable for me in the WordPress world, and, having grown disenchanted with where that project was going, I re-evaluated several more robust content management systems. I pretty quickly chose Drupal. It was designed to be both secure and a full-site CMS from the ground up, and, while there was quite a learning curve, I think the result has been worth it. Also, it gave me an opportunity to redesign a lot of this site from scratch.
I've had this domain name since the mid-90's. I've used Ryumaou as a moniker on the internet for even longer than that. I chose the name based on a number of factors, including a love of Japanese culture and the old 8 character name limit on older UNIX systems. At the time, I had a pen pal in Japan who helped me work the name out. As it turns out, it's also the name of a character from the Nintendo 64 game Flying Dragon, known in Japan as Hiryƫ no Ken Twin, though I didn't realize it at the time. I was told that the name Ryumaou meant "dragon wizard", but it is probably closer to "ogre wizard" or "ogre king." In any case, that's all ancient history now, and the name has stuck.
And, for my less network-geeky efforts and my more current blog, you can always check out my other site at JKHoffman.com.
