Oh, Christ, is the only thing I can think to say!
While out looking for something else entrely, I found the strangest website and organization. They call themselves “Liberated Christians” and espouse a very liberal attitude, indeed. According to their website, they see no conflict between the practice of “swinging” or “polyamorism” and Christianity. (If you’re not familiar with these concepts, first off, congradulations! Second, it means having multiple sex partners concurrently.) I cannot imagine what church they’re associated with, unless they’ve created their own. Really, the very idea of this is totally against everything I’ve ever heard or read about the Judeo-Christian tradition. They challenge anyone to show them in the Bible where it says that monogmy is the correct form of marriage and claim that no one can. Personally, I’d refer them to the Book of Deuteronomy, specifically, Chapter 5, verse 18 and verse 21. They seem pretty clear on what not to do, which, by process of elimination, leaves something that suspiciously looks like monogomy.
Of course, I’m still not sure where divorce fits in, but there doesn’t seem to be a prohibition against it anywhere in the Bible that I know of, at least. And, frankly, one at a time seems a whole lot different than what these folks are espousing. Of course, since these rather unusual folks are based out of Phoenix, Arizona, it may be that the heat got to them. I don’t know, maybe there’s just something about living in Phoenix that does something to your thinking. Well, anyway, Phoenix is as good a place as any for them, I suppose. Freaky.

  1. The bible’s postion on divorce is clear: you can divorce, but if you remarry anyone other than your husband/wife you are considered an adulterer. And you know the fate of adulterers. . . We aren’t talking Old Testament either!

  2. Well, that first one seems to put me in the clear, but that other one… Ah, well, at least I won’t be lonely in Hell. Of course, maybe she counts as an “unbeliever”. Not sure, really, as we never went to church together and I’ve only recently returned. I leave it in God’s hands to make His way known to me. (But, polyamory ‘aint the way. That much I know!)

  3. You and me and half of the planet will be there too. Here’s a thought: Maybe much like our overcrowded prison system, We’ll get off with a slap on the wrist and little hell ankle bracelets — home arrest — as it were.

I think I could do the “hell” home arrest thing, as long as I could still watch tv and listen to music. Think the big D might go for that?

  4. Nope, no fashionista ankle bracelet home arrest for you guys. At our last staff meeting, God made it clear that He wants you with Him, so He can keep an eye on you. Sheesh, troublemakers.

BTW, according to some Judeo-Christian texts, you may have as many concubines as you wish. Polyamory means loving many, not necessarily marrying many. So, Love Away!

If you want to chat about marrying many, see the old Mormon writings, though the main Mormon church now denounces polygamy.

Warmest (and I do mean that) regards,

  5. Hey, Network Geek, what do our colleagues over at the Universal Life Church have to say about polyamory, if anything?

Apropos of nothing at all, I played a piano duet with my daughter for her recital on Sunday. It was my first public performance (*I’m* the beginner here; she has several years of study on me), and we did just fine, though I’m told that the video clearly shows my hands shaking during the performance.

  6. ULC has no position on anything other than freedom of speech and taxes. They’re in favor of the first and against the second.
About all that other stuff, though, I have no idea. I guess I’ll find out when that final trumpet is sounded. Until then, I’m just playing it by ear!

Glad your recital went well, shakes and all. Remember, a hero is someone who is afraid and does the right thing anyway, so good job.
