So, who’s worthy of your coveted link section on your blog?
Today, instead of working like a fevered dog, I read blogs. Lots of them. In fact, I left comments on quite a few, too. Some of these blogs, I’ve been reading for months, and some, I just started reading recently. Some of these fine folks have links to my website, but not everyone and there is no direct correllation between length of time I’ve been reading and commenting on their blogs and whether or not I have a link.
That made me think about who I link to, and why. The answers are not good. There’s little ryhme and less reason to why I link to folks on that sidebar menu. Sometimes, it’s because they have useful professional information. Sometimes, it’s because they’re funny. Or, because their writing really touched me in some way or another. Sadly, sometimes, it’s little more than a very limited popularity contest. If I like you, you get a link. Sometimes, I just like people, even though I may not agree with them or be a part of their world at all, but, still, I like them, so…
Yeah, I know, it’s so very, very Junior High of me, but, well, so be it.
So, why do you all link to other people’s blogs? And, more importantly, why do you not link to others?

  1. I link to blogs that I enjoy reading. The links are seldom updated because it’s too much trouble to modify the template and I try to keep the list to a maximum of about 10 or so links.

  2. Confession: I link not because I cannot figure out how to do it… genius me.

  3. I keep it pretty tight without being exclusionary. Only so many links one can read and usually someone else who reads you is not interested in following other links. More an easy way to read the blogs you’re interested in.

  4. Alison – No worries. You’ll figure it out. Ask a fellow blogspot blogger for help and someone will square you away.

Hassan and Mark – Well, I guess that puts me in fairly exclusive group with you two. Sweet!

LOL Didn’t mean to make you feel guilty, Jill. Honest! I wasn’t fishing! I just got to thinking is all, and, well, we know how dangerous that can be! 😉

I’d have posted that last bit in a separate comment, but my provider is having issues with the server time. If I had admin access to the right part of the server, I could fix that in under a minute, but… Ah, well, the post that rolled back will show up again. Hopefully, the comments will work again then, too.

  5. Considering I’m using work servers to host the blog, I try to link to blogs that also cover technical content or other blogs at my workplace. Being a University greatly helps in allowing me the bredth of topcis I DO cover. If this was a private blog I’d link to a few more people.

  6. Oh my God, Network Geek, I feel so bad, that was a total oversight on my part! I completely thought you were on my blogroll. I hardly ever look at it because I read everyone’s blogs through bloglines. Basically, I put the blogrolling shortcut link on one of my computers but not the other, so if I’m on the wrong computer and I want to add a link, I put it off until I can do it with one click. But because I felt so bad about the oversight, I went immediately to blogrolling and logged in and everything! I’m so lazy sometimes…
