Websites lie.

There, I said it.
Well, I wrote it.  Anyway, you and I and everyone else with half a brain know that these “free” websites are paid for in some way.  Mostly, that way is advertising.  Sometimes, that advertising involves selling personal data that they’ve collected.  Oh, c’mon, don’t act so shocked.  You know it’s true just like I do.  The big [amazon_link id=”B0001EQIFQ” target=”_blank” ]Internet Bust of 2000[/amazon_link] showed us all that companies without a good revenue model will, ultimately, fail.  And, the best revenue model of all on the Internet is selling your data to advertisers.

The thing is, wouldn’t it be nice if they just admitted that up front?
Well, Dan Tynan over at IT World has a modest proposal; The first truly honest privacy policy.

Watch out, because I may just start using this on my sites!
But, I won’t warn you ahead of time…

This is only of interest to people who have webservers, but it’s worth writing about.

According to TechRepublic, QualsysGuard Malware Detection is letting you scan your webservers for free.
You have to be able to verify the domain with an e-mail address, so it really is for serious folks who actually have a webserver and verifiable e-mail, but it is free.  No word on how long it will be free, but, for the moment, it is, so go get it!

I’m a resource hog.

One of my several websites has used 5856.36 megabytes of 6500.00 megabytes of bandwidth as of 13:55 today. Do you think it will make it until midnight when the counters reset?

Build Your Own Lava Lamp

No, really, it is possible!

At least, according to this website, it is. Now, I haven’t actually tried this myself, so it could be harder than it looks. And, anyone under 18 should get approval and help from an adult. But, they do have several “recipes” for making lava lamps, including a link to one that has a “Kids Version“. (But, the approval thing sill applies!)

Anyway, it looked like a fun one for a Friday!

Neglect

Why have I been neglecting this blog?

Ah, the answer to that is long and complicated. It involves other websites and other projects. But, it’s more complicated than that. It involves a real job that keeps me busy during the day. It’s about spending time with family. It’s about actually having fun! But, mainly, it’s about that other website……
Hey, why not go check it out? If you’re a game geek or a fantasy fiction geek you might just find something that tickles your fancy!
