There's an old joke among sysadmins. "The software said it needed Windows X or better, so I installed Linux."
The joke, of course, is that basically, any operating system is better than Windows, at least for the hardcore geeks who are system administrators. Why am I bringing that up? Because I just upgraded this site from WordPress (and hand-crafted HTML files) to Drupal. Over the past several months there's been some revealing conversations in the WordPress community about who owns what and how it all fits together. As it turns out, the "Benevolent Dictator for Life" (aka project lead) for WordPress, Matt Mullenweg, and his company, Automattic, own all the trademarks for WordPress and some of the key updating technologies that let us all keep our WordPress sites on the latest software. All this time, I thought that the WordPress Foundation owned WordPress.org, but it turns out, Matt does and he's just been letting everyone use that to pull updates from out of the goodness of his heart. Unfortunately, he's also shown that he can, and will, remove that access any time he wants, virtually crippling everyone who's relied on it without any warning.
When you combine that with more and more disenchantment with the "improvements" that were being forced into WordPress, I decided it was time to look at some of the other content management systems out there. What I ended up choosing was, you guessed it, Drupal.
It's a pretty big change, but, so far, I'm happy with it. I've been writing documentation for the absolute beginner as I go, with the hope that this will be useful for anyone who's following behind me.
So, you may see some cosmetic changes on the site as I experiment with Drupal and themes. Nothing to worry about, dear readers, but I thought I'd post an update about the whole thing.
